Since I have all new furniture, and I spent the first week of school on cafeteria duty with the middle school, I do not let the middle school students eat during middle school lunch. However, I do let the high school students eat in here. During club meetings, the students can eat in the library. I really don't mind the food as long as trash gets disposed of properly. I don't want to discourage kids from using the library because they need to eat. I have to confess, the middle schoolers who come to the library at lunch are few and far between, so I don't really have to deal with their eating habits. Lots of 9th graders come though, and they behave really well. The middle schoolers do eat in the library after school while they study, and their parent s are happy about it. But again, not a huge amount of middle schoolers hang out, we are overrun by high schoolers, which might be good when it comes to the food rule Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12525174545940100216noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8325789614897723018.post-60451167040069104962013-12-10T20:20:52.358-08:002013-12-10T20:20:52.358-08:00This is awesome! You know that you are one of my librarian super heroes and all ... though you are younger than I, I really hope to be just like you when I'm a full grown librarian some day ... but I just can't get my head around our kids eating in our library. Maybe it's our age group, but out on our dining terrace, I swear that barely half of the food on kids' plates actually makes it into their mouths. It, literally, looks like the majority of humans dining in the area were toddlers in high chairs. It's weird! It's like the skill of moving food from a plate to a mouth using a fork that was mastered in grade 6 suddenly gets lost for 3 years. Seriously, it's really weird!!! I'm trying to get everyone to understand it in 9th grade so I don't have to focus on ti anymore in high school, but rather check in with them periodically about it. this was an experiment year - should be interesting. Like you, I long for the day when trying to determine if something is print or digital or a magazine or journal no longer matters. Sure, it all makes sense to me, but it's foreign for kids growing up digital (as cliche as that may sound).

My last round of student researchers seemed to spend more time worrying about the format of their citations than they did about their ideas, and that worries me. I'm not trying to say that citing sources and giving credit to other thinkers isn't important, but the more I think about it, the less important MLA, APA, etc. seems. These citation styles almost seem archaic. Sure they'll use these styles in college, but then there's a lot of obsolete tradition in higher ed.

I'm feel unsettled by the traditional research paper and bibliography. I'm trying to sort out the source of the friction.

Again, thanks for sharing this. You're right about no one wanting to do citations in abstract. One-on-one is where it makes the most sense. Our branch library has discovered, through our ongoing book sales within the library, that local people are eager to buy almost any book, if the price is right. We sell everything that we receive from the public (or nearly everything; extensive mold is not usually appreciated). And we sell directly to the public. Encyclopedias and textbooks--even old ones--are especially popular, because they are seen as benefiting children's education. Among our browsers, we have collectors of ephemera and old books, Vietnam vets who love history, people with literary interests, women who buy up piles of magazines (a quarter a magazine, with an informal bulk discount). Did I mention that this is a poor neighborhood? Very poor, but ambitious.

Library book sales in neighborhoods like ours benefit the people in the neighborhoods, because cheap prices and good variety allow people to own their own books and further their interests and education.

And the neighborhood library--a true nonprofit--benefits as well. The $250 a month we bring in from the ongoing book sales adds up, after a year, to a nice little purchase of Spanish-language children's books perfectly tailored to our branch.

What I'm saying is that giving discarded library books to Better World Books should not necessarily make you feel better. Better World Books plays cleverly on the powerful desire to do the right thing. But why should a nonprofit get all glow-y and good-feeling about funneling publicly-purchased property into the hands of a for-profit enterprise with a nice website?Sixrecordsofafloatinglifehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00265104249805179907noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8325789614897723018.post-49773351767735605682012-09-04T08:20:04.864-07:002012-09-04T08:20:04.864-07:00I few years ago I read about StudyBlue and Evernot...I few years ago I read about StudyBlue and Evernote and how one can make flashcards out of Evernote notes.
